Happy Friday!

I’m starting to get really excited about tomorrow’s triathlon. I think I may even sleep in my bathing suit tonight.  Just joking!

I was in the mood for a protein filled breakfast this morning, so I threw together some tomato & basil scrambled eggs.  For two, I used 5 eggs and a dash of milk.

Be prepared to see basil in most of our meals in the next week week :)

I also added some S & P and garlic powder.  No tabasco this time!

And I had the last piece of Omega-3 seed bread with almond butter.

I am slowly started to phase out my cereal-every-day routine!

Now onto something fitness related – the benefits of swimming.

Last night at the BBQ, I was talking to a few friends about how much I loved to swim.  From a young age I have enjoyed swimming. I was involved with a summer swim league from age 5 to 15, and was on the swim team my freshman year of high school. 

Here are a few reasons why I enjoy swimming so much:

  • It’s a low impact exercise – so I dont’ have to worry about pressure on my joints
  • It’s a full body workout
  • It improves cardiovascular conditioning, muscle strength, and endurance
  • I find it relaxing

During our swimming discussion, someone brought up the question of whether or not swimming burns fat.  I had not really thought about this before, so I did some research.

And what did I find?  A lot of conflicting information!

  • One article said swimming is less effective than other forms of exercise at promoting weight loss, and has a minor impact on metabolic rate after exercise.
  • Another article said that swimming leads to the growth and strength of lean muscle and muscle growth means metabolism growth, which increases the ability to burn fat consistently.  The same article states that swimming burns more calories than most any other aerobic exercises.

Confused?  Me too!

Here are my thoughts:

  • Regardless of how much fat swimming burns, it is an excellent low impact, full body workout!
  • Losing weight is about burning calories & swimming is  aerobic – so you are burning calories!
  • For maximum benefit, vary your workout routine.  Don’t just swim or run or bike everyday.  Your muscles get used to the same thing and will eventually plateau. Mix up your cardio workouts and combine them with strentgh training.

Does anyone have any additional information on the benefits of swimming and whether or not it burns fat?

A piece of advice my friends, do not go to the grocery store hungry!  It will only lead to unnecessary impulse buys.  Like these Snyder’s Jalapeno pretzel pieces.

We totally don’t need these, but they were calling out my name as I was meandering down the aisle!  And don’t you worry, I got the southern BBQ flavor as well.  These may come in handy during our road trip this weekend at least.  I would also like to add that they were on sale :)

I went to the grocery store to get fish for dinner tonight, and ended up coming home with:

  • Cherries
  • Pears
  • Peaches
  • Two pints of ice cream (bogo!)
  • Yogurt
  • Pretzel pieces
  • Eggs
  • Reece’s Pieces

Every single item was on sale though!  And I give myself a pat on the back for everything but the pretzels and Reece’s Pieces.  I will never pass up ice cream that is buy one get one free :)

Because we are going away for a long weekend, I wanted to use up a few things hanging around in our fridge.  I was proud of myself for using the last of a lot of items.

I used the last of our smoked salmon and sunflower bread.

And I used the last of our goat cheese, tomatoes and capers.

The tomatoes and capers are hiding beneath the salmon.

I also head a pear on the side.

With a little bit of AB on top.  I wasn’t sure if I would like AB on pear, so I left the other half as is.

And of course I had to have a small handful of jalapeno pretzel pieces!

I think it was a pretty well balanced lunch.

I did end up liking the AB on the pear.  I think AB goes with anything really?

As I was about to chow down, I realized I needed a napkin, so I got up to get one.  On my way back to the couch (yes, I eat lunch on  the couch, not at the table) I noticed someone had stolen my seat!

Nylah – Hmmm… maybe if I look the other way and pretend like I don’t see her I’ll get to keep this spot.

Me –  Nice try sista. Scoot!

At least she didn’t steal my food!  I’d prefer a stolen seat over stolen food :)

What’s red and white and green all over?

A spinach & feta salad with leftover BBQ chicken from last night!

Leftover chicken is the best because it’s so easy to throw on top of a salad the next day.

What’s in there?

  • Spinach
  • Chicken
  • Tomatoes (from the vine)
  • Cucumber
  • Scallions
  • Feta
  • Dash of pepper

The dressing consisted of:

  • ~1 tbsp evoo
  • ~1 tbsp white wine vinegar 

It really could have used a few carrots or red pepper to make it more colorful, but oh well, I didn’t have any.

On the side I had a piece of sunflower bread.

I chose an end piece because I wanted a lot of seeds :)

With almond butter spread on.  After I toasted it of course.  I love my bread toasted!

Did you know that there are over 200 species of raspberries and they can be red, black, yellow, or purple?   Just a little fun fact :)
