Happy Friday!

I’m starting to get really excited about tomorrow’s triathlon. I think I may even sleep in my bathing suit tonight.  Just joking!

I was in the mood for a protein filled breakfast this morning, so I threw together some tomato & basil scrambled eggs.  For two, I used 5 eggs and a dash of milk.

Be prepared to see basil in most of our meals in the next week week :)

I also added some S & P and garlic powder.  No tabasco this time!

And I had the last piece of Omega-3 seed bread with almond butter.

I am slowly started to phase out my cereal-every-day routine!

Let’s just hope I can do the same with sandwiches :)

Now onto something fitness related – the benefits of swimming.

Last night at the BBQ, I was talking to a few friends about how much I loved to swim.  From a young age I have enjoyed swimming. I was involved with a summer swim league from age 5 to 15, and was on the swim team my freshman year of high school.

Here are a few reasons why I enjoy swimming so much:

  • It’s a low impact exercise – so I dont’ have to worry about pressure on my joints
  • It’s a full body workout
  • It improves cardiovascular conditioning, muscle strength, and endurance
  • I find it relaxing

During our swimming discussion, someone brought up the question of whether or not swimming burns fat.  I had not really thought about this before, so I did some research.

And what did I find?  A lot of conflicting information!

  • One article said swimming is less effective than other forms of exercise at promoting weight loss, and has a minor impact on metabolic rate after exercise.
  • Another article said that swimming leads to the growth and strength of lean muscle and muscle growth means metabolism growth, which increases the ability to burn fat consistently.  The same article states that swimming burns more calories than most any other aerobic exercises.

Confused?  Me too!

Here are my thoughts:

  • Regardless of how much fat swimming burns, it is an excellent low impact, full body workout!
  • Losing weight is about burning calories & swimming is  aerobic – so you are burning calories!
  • For maximum benefit, vary your workout routine.  Don’t just swim or run or bike everyday.  Your muscles get used to the same thing and will eventually plateau. Mix up your cardio workouts and combine them with strentgh training.

Does anyone have any additional information on the benefits of swimming and whether or not it burns fat?

No cereal for me this morning!   And no gym either.  I was wiped when the alarm went off, so I went back to sleep for an hour.  I may try to fit some laps into my schedule tonight.

I was in the mood for scrambled eggs this morning, and two Flat Out wraps were staring me in the face when I opened the fridge, so I decided to make a scramble egg wrap!

I whisked together 1 egg and 2 egg whites and a tbsp of milk.  While the eggs were cooking,  I melted a slice of pepper jack cheese under the broiler.

I love the addition of cheese to scrambled eggs :)

I also added a handful of spinach.

Plus a dash of S & P and a few shakes of Tabasco.

I also had a bowl of blueberries to get a serving of fruit in.

What nice protein and fiber filled breakfast.

As I was pouring the milk into the eggs this morning, I had a little brain lapse and couldn’t remember why I always add a dash of milk to my eggs.  A split second later I realized it was because the milk makes them more fluffy!  At least I always thought it did?

Do you add milk to your eggs?

I slept great until about 6:30 this morning when Sammy and Nylah somehow managed to push themselves through the bedroom door and cause a ruckus in our room.  Chris, being the early riser that he is, was nice enough to take them out while I shut my eyes for another hour and a half :)

This morning I started off with a piece of 9-grain toast with Skippy peanut butter, and Smucker’s blackberry jam.  And 1/2 cup of Danon Light and Fit vanilla yogurt with wheat germ sprinkled on top.

What a nice way to start the morning.

Chris was playing soccer from 9 ’til 11 so I wanted to wait until he got home to have a proper breakfast.  Although I guess by then it was brunch!

We opted to make some eggs when Chris got home.  Eggs are my weekend breakfast food of choice while Chris always prefers pancakes or waffles.

I chopped up some onion, the last bit of red pepper we had, and some spinach.

The colors reminded me of our days in the North End (the Italian district) in Boston :)

And what are eggs without some cheese?

Mozzarella (on the left) and Pepper Jack (on the right)

My plate!

After we ate our eggs, Chris declared that he still needed a little something and decided to make smoothies for us!

What’s in there?

  • Raspberries
  • Strawberries
  • Blackberries
  • Blueberries
  • Mangoes
  • Bananas

* all fruit was frozen

It was superb!

Now I am going to head to Trader Joe’s to get the fixings for some sangria!  We are headed to our friends house this afternoon and that will be our contribution.  Can you believe I have never made sangria before??
